Ear seeds are a gentle, needle-free therapy used to stimulate acupuncture points on the outer ear. Often used alongside acupuncture, they provide ongoing stimulation between treatments and may support stress, sleep, pain, fertility, pregnancy and overall wellbeing.
At ORA Acupuncture, ear seeds are frequently incorporated into treatment plans to help extend the effects of acupuncture and give you a simple way to continue your care at home.
What are ear seeds?
Ear seeds are tiny seeds (traditionally from the Vaccaria plant) or small gold or stainless-steel beads attached to the ear using a small piece of hypoallergenic adhesive tape.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the ear is considered a microsystem, meaning specific points on the ear correspond with different parts of the body. By stimulating these points, ear seeds aim to support the body's natural ability to restore balance.
Unlike acupuncture needles, ear seeds do not pierce the skin. They remain in place for several days, allowing you to gently stimulate the points yourself between appointments.
How do ear seeds work?
There are two ways to understand how ear seeds may work.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
In TCM, stimulating specific points on the ear helps regulate the flow of Qi (energy) through the body's channels. Your practitioner selects points based on your health journey.
Modern research
Researchers believe that stimulating certain areas of the ear may influence branches of the vagus nerve and other cranial nerves. These pathways play an important role in regulating the nervous system and the body's stress response.
Research into auricular acupuncture and ear acupressure continues to grow. While evidence is stronger for some conditions than others, studies suggest ear stimulation may be helpful for a range of health concerns when used as part of an overall treatment plan.
What can ear seeds help with?
Ear seeds are not a one-size-fits-all treatment. The points chosen will depend on your health concerns and treatment goals.
They may be used to support:
Stress and nervous system regulation
Many people find ear seeds help them feel calmer throughout the day. Gently pressing the seeds can become a simple mindfulness practice that encourages the body to slow down and shift towards a more relaxed state.
Anxiety
Auricular acupuncture has been studied as a supportive therapy for anxiety in a variety of healthcare settings. While results vary, some research has shown improvements in anxiety symptoms compared with standard care or sham treatments.
Sleep
If you're struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep, ear seeds may be included as part of an acupuncture treatment plan to support better sleep quality.
Pain
Research has investigated ear acupuncture for a range of pain conditions, including headaches, neck pain, back pain and post-operative pain. Ear seeds may help provide ongoing stimulation between appointments.
Fertility and IVF
Trying to conceive can be emotionally and physically demanding. Ear seeds are often used alongside acupuncture to support relaxation, nervous system regulation and overall wellbeing throughout fertility treatment and IVF. I often needle these points pre and post trasnfer due to their lasting effects.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, ear seeds may be used on carefully selected points to support symptoms such as nausea, stress or discomfort. As with acupuncture, point selection is always individualised and appropriate for your stage of pregnancy.
Labour preparation and birth
If you've seen me for labour preparation, you've likely gone home with ear seeds. While they're commonly used on the ear, I also use these small adhesive beads on selected acupuncture points on the body. They can remain in place for up to a week, providing gentle stimulation in the lead-up to labour and serving as an easy marker for your birth partner to locate the acupressure points during labour.
Postpartum recovery
The weeks after birth can be physically and emotionally demanding. Ear seeds may be incorporated into postpartum care to support rest, recovery and emotional wellbeing while adjusting to life with a new baby.
Hormonal health
Ear seeds may also be used as part of a treatment plan for menstrual concerns, PMS, perimenopause and menopause, alongside acupuncture and lifestyle support.
What does the research say?
Research into auricular acupuncture and ear acupressure is encouraging, particularly for pain, anxiety, nausea and insomnia. Scientists continue to investigate how stimulation of the outer ear influences the nervous system, including pathways involving the vagus nerve.
While ear seeds are not a cure for any medical condition, they may be a helpful addition to an evidence-informed acupuncture treatment plan. The quality of research varies between conditions, and more high-quality studies are still needed.
How to use your ear seeds
Your practitioner will show you which ear seeds have been applied and explain how to care for them.
For most people:
Gently press each ear seed for around 30 seconds, three to five times each day.
Apply firm but comfortable pressure, you don't need to press hard.
Wash your hands before touching the ear seeds.
Leave them in place for approximately 3–5 days, or as advised by your practitioner.
Remove them sooner if they become hot or uncomfortable or if the adhesive begins to lift.
You can continue with most normal daily activities, including showering, although it's best to avoid prolonged soaking or vigorous rubbing of the ear.
Are ear seeds safe?
Ear seeds are generally considered very safe when applied by a qualified practitioner.
Occasionally, people may notice mild tenderness over the point or slight skin irritation from the adhesive. If irritation develops, simply remove the ear seed and allow the skin to settle.
Ear seeds should not be applied over broken, infected or irritated skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do ear seeds hurt?
No. Ear seeds sit on the surface of the skin and do not pierce the ear. Some points may feel tender when pressed, which is normal.
How long do ear seeds stay on?
Most ear seeds remain in place for three to five days, although some stay on for up to a week.
Can I shower with ear seeds?
Yes. Try to avoid rubbing them with a towel or soaking them for long periods, as this may loosen the adhesive.
Can I press my ear seeds more than recommended?
Gentle stimulation several times a day is usually sufficient. However if advised by your practitioner some points can be used when for exmaple nause is at its worse or emotions are high.
Can ear seeds replace acupuncture?
Ear seeds work best as an extension of your acupuncture treatment rather than a replacement. They provide gentle, ongoing stimulation between appointments but are only one part of a personalised treatment plan.
