Hyperemesis gravidarum support in Auckland
Acupuncture for HG and severe pregnancy nausea, alongside your medical care.
Hyperemesis Gravadium (HG) or Morning Sickness?
HG is not a bad case of morning sickness. It is relentless nausea and vomiting that makes it hard to eat, drink or get through the day. It can take over your life.
I see women with HG at Birthcare in Parnell and at my Point Chevalier clinic. Some have been in hospital. Many have not, but are absolutely not fine.
I have been there
During my first pregnancy, while living in Cardiff, I developed severe hyperemesis gravidarum and was hospitalised, unable to work and unable to keep anything down, not even water. When I became pregnant with my second child, my husband suggested I try acupuncture. I simply couldn't deny the difference it made.
Those experiences changed the course of my life. Read my story.
What is HG?
Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. It affects about 1 to 2 in every 100 pregnancies. It often starts around six weeks. For many women it eases around 20 weeks, but for some it lasts until birth.
HG can lead to dehydration, weight loss and exhaustion. It also takes a toll on mood. Read more: Morning sickness or HG?
How I can help
Acupuncture sits alongside the care of your midwife, obstetrician or GP. It does not replace it.
Your first appointment starts with time to talk. I look at what you are keeping down, your sleep, energy and digestion, and how you are coping. I also look at your tongue and pulse. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, nausea in pregnancy is seen as Stomach Qi rising when it should descend. Treatment aims to settle it.
Treatment is gentle. You can lie on your side or rest semi-reclined. Needle-free options are available. You also leave with a plan for home, with foods, drinks and acupressure to use between treatments.
When symptoms are at their worst, I often see women more than once a week. As things ease, we space treatments out.
